Garam Masala

~An aromatic blend for bold Indian flavors~

Few spice blends evoke the warmth and depth of Indian cuisine quite like garam masala. The name itself is telling: “garam” in Hindi means “hot” or “warming,” and “masala” refers to a mixture of spices. Together, garam masala is designed to warm the body, awaken the senses, and bring balance to meals.

The Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp ground cumin
  • 2 tbsp ground coriander
  • 2 tbsp ground cardamom
  • 2 tbsp ground cloves
  • 2 tbsp ground black pepper
  • 2 tbsp ground turmeric
  • 2 tbsp ground fennel seeds (optional)
  • 2 tbsp ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Combine all the spices in a small bowl.
  2. Mix thoroughly until evenly blended.
  3. Transfer the garam masala to an airtight container or spice jar.
  4. Store in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months to maintain freshness.

Cooking Tips

For maximum aroma and flavor, grind the spices just before mixing. You can adjust the amounts of fennel seeds or nutmeg according to your taste. Remember, garam masala is potent, so start with a small pinch and increase gradually as needed.
